FS 2024: Lecture "History of International Law"

The course’s objective is to deepen the understanding of contemporary international law and international relations. It introduces milestones of the development of international law and sheds light on the genealogy of important rules. In the first part of the course, we will discuss topics such as the historical roots of international law and diplomatic relations, international law and colonization, peace and stability, decolonization, world wars and collective security, and the emerging age of human rights. In the second part, a number of participants will be given the opportunity to hold a presentation on a jointly agreed topic. 

25 students are admitted to the course.  The participants can either hold a presentation and submit a seminar paper of 3,500 words (15 slots) or take an oral examination at the end of the semester (10 slots). Attendance in class is mandatory, active participation expected.
